The first Convocation was held on December 28, 1922 which was presided    over by the Her Highness Sultan Jahan Begum, Ruler of Bhopal, who also delivered the Convocation Address. Janab Mohammad Ali Mohammad Shafi, who had succeeded Harcourt Butler as Education Member of the Viceroy's Council, was the first recipient of the degree of D.litt(honoris causa) in 1922.

" From the seed which we sow today there shall spring up a mighty tree, whose branches, like those of the Banyan of the soil, will in turn strike firm roots into earth and themselves send forth new and vigorous saplings. This College shall expand into a University whose sons will go forth throughout the length and breadth of the land to preach the gospel of free enquiry, of large hearted toleration, and of pure morality."
